Alabama Shakes

Three tracks into the Alabama Shakes’ debut album Boys and Girls, I was rolling the windows in my car down to feel summer in the air with a smile on my face.

(Yeah, it’s April in Florida, but it feels like summer…and has since February)

Every time I’ve listened to it (which, believe me, has been many, many times) I have fallen more in love with this band.

Blues? Check.

Soul? Check.

Southern Rock? Check.

Bad ass female lead singer? Check.

You don’t see a lot of talented bands of this genre with a lady at the helm, but the Shakes’ Brittany Howard will make you believe that every soul/blues/rock band should have a powerful female lead vocal.

That is, of course, if you can find more women who have Howard’s amazing, soulful voice and charisma.

My favorite jam on this record changes almost daily, but for the moment I’m stuck on “I Found You” which is a contemporary, upbeat love song that I’m a little bit obsessed with.

If you’re looking for some sweet summer tunes, I definitely recommend picking up Boys and Girls.

Rock on ladies!
