Have you ever wished that someone with an Adele-caliber voice went to liberal arts college in upstate New York and started a sweet rock band?
Well, she did, and her name is Grace Potter, and you should be listening to her right now.
I first saw Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on Conan a few weeks ago (say what you will about Conan’s new show, but he books good bands — maybe not as indie as some people would like, but definitely outside the mainstream, which I appreciate). I was humming the song for a few days after, but my ADD kept me from looking them up to check out the rest of the record.
Flash forward to earlier this week when I was checking iTunes for some new jams and recognized the name. I previewed a couple of songs and right away knew that I needed to download the entire album — The Lion, The Beast, The Beat.
Now it’s all I listen to in the car, on my iPhone, on the computer and as a result, in my sleep.
Just like Alabama Shakes, I’m really digging the fact that this band is led by another bad ass chick. In fact, Grace Potter is so amazing I kind of have a lady crush on her. I want to be her, she’s so awesome.
I mean really, how bleeping bad ass is this:
She’s definitely got some classic rock influences going on (the kind that make you realize how crappy today’s “alternative” rock is) but she has some country vibes, too, as heard on her duets with Willie Nelson and Kenny Chesney.
I love the snot out of every song on this CD.
Seriously, the snot.
(That’s a compliment, by the way…)
My favorite jam on the album right now is Timekeeper — this amazing, soul laden track that makes you ask yourself how a 26 year old can sing this song like she’s lived through a hundred years of heart ache and bitter life experiences.
The moral of the story is this: Whatever you’re doing right now, stop it. Stop it and go to Amazon or iTunes and buy this album.
Right now.
I’m going to go drive my car around the block a couple times to I can belt out a few songs and fool myself into thinking I will be the next Grace Potter.
